Acquiring a Social Security Card
Before you can begin work on campus you must have a Social
Security Card.
Follow these instructions to acquire a card. Who is eligible?:
Students with F-1 and J-1 visas.
Dependants of J-1 and F-1 students are NOT eligible.
Instructions for applying for an SSN:
- Find
a job /a>and get a letter from your on campus employer or the
TCU Human Resources Department
to verify that you have a job.
- Visit our office for a letter verifying your F-1 status.
- Visit the
Social Security Administration Office to apply for your SSN.
Important: If you are a new student wait at least 15 days
before applying for a Social Security Card. By applying for a card
prematurely, you could be forced to wait for a Social Security Card

delay in the transfer of data from the SEVIS immigration
department's computer system to the Social Security Administration's
system.
